Afterschool Webinars

This is the first in a series of advocacy-focused webinars sponsored by the Bowne Foundation. During this 30-minute webinar, guest speakers will share how they engage parents and prepare them to be effective afterschool advocates through hands-on training and other initiatives.

In this webinar we explore the state of computing and engineering within K-12 education, and the role of afterschool as an important ally. We’ll also hear from afterschool leaders that are working to provide quality engineering and/or computing programs to youth in cities from Santa Fe to Baltimore.

All students deserve opportunities for rigorous and meaningful STEM learning, regardless race or ethnicity, culture, gender, socioeconomic status, language, or disability status. It’s not enough to just provide increased access—we must think carefully about how we design programs, choose curriculum or projects, and interact with youth to best support their success in STEM.

This webinar will focus on Title IV of ESSA and opportunities for community-school partnerships such as the Student Success and Academic Enrichment block grant, 21st Century Community Learning Centers, Full Service Community Schools, Promise Neighborhoods, and Statewide Family Engagement Centers. 

The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) was signed into law by President Obama last month effectively reauthorizing the Elementary and Secondary Education Act – but what does ESSA mean for afterschool and summer learning program providers?

Those of us in the out-of-school time field have long known that afterschool and summer programs can have a huge impact on youth through the development of social and emotional skills, even if we haven’t always called them by that name. Join us for a great discussion of how and why afterschool programs around the country are doubling down on the importance of SEL during which our expert presenters will help identify straightforward, cost-effective strategies for improving SEL in any program.
 

Environmental education inspires student to engage with and learn about the world around them. Afterschool programs have a unique opportunity to foster this exploration of the natural world, take students outside, and engage students in real-world science. Join us with Plum Landing, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, and Science Action Club for a conversation on tools, curriculum, and resources on environmental education in afterschool.

The COVID-19 pandemic is exposing and widening existing social justice gaps in education broadly and out-of-school time is no exception. Given this unprecedented time, we focus on real-time approaches that afterschool and summer learning programs can use to move the needle on issues of equity and access.
