700 Rally for Afterschool on Capitol Hill Led by Youth Cheer, Meet Congress - April 20, 2010

The always inspiring Judge Glenda Hatchett led us in a fiery rally on the Capitol Lawn today, calling on  leaders to support the afterschool programs that keep our kids safe, inspire them to learn and help working families. The rally wrapped up face-to-face meetings that 700 friends of afterschool had with individual Members of Congress. Wish you could’ve been there? Email your Members from home. http://capwiz.com/afterschool/home/

Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and Representatives Dale Kildee (D-MI), Nita Lowey (D-NY) and Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) spoke about the importance of afterschool programs in supporting today’s struggling families and giving kids the types of hands-on learning experiences that get them excited about school, and boost student outcomes.

A highlight of the rally was a special cheer written by a corps of afterschool youth who travelled to D.C. from all around the country to meet with Members of Congress.   Their words, reverberated across the Hill, summed up why Afterschool Is Key. Despite a long day on their feet, the crowd got fired up all over again as the students shouted out their rallying words:

A is for the Activities I do in my afterschool program
F is for the friends I make in my program
T is for the technology I use afterschool
E is for how much I enjoy my program
R is for responsibilities afterschool
S is for the snacks I eat in my afterschool program
C is for the computers I use at my program
H is for the homework I finish after school
O is for the opportunities I get through my afterschool program
O is for the outstanding work I do afterschool
L is for the leadership skills I learn in my program

I is for the inspiration I get from my afterschool program
S is for the success I have afterschool

K is for the killer dance moves I learn at my afterschool program
E is for the great education I get afterschool
Y is for the other youth in my afterschool program
