River City Drumbeat, a new documentary about the River City Drum Corp afterschool program, is a powerful story of music, love, and legacies. Edward "Nardie" White devoted his life to leading the African-American drum corps he co-founded with his wife Zambia Nkrumah in Louisville, Kentucky three decades ago. Together they inspired youth from their West Louisville neighborhood to thrive by connecting them with the art and cultural traditions of their African ancestors. Now Albert Shumake, whose destiny was shaped by the drumline, must take up the mantle for the next generation. Meanwhile, student drummers Imani, Jailen, and Emily navigate adolescence and life changes. River City Drumbeat follows this creative community of mentors, parents, and youth making their way in a world where systemic forces raise obstacles to fulfilling their dreams.

This event kicks off the Afterschool Alliance's 22nd annual Lights On Afterschool, the nation's celebration of afterschool programs. Lights On Afterschool is held each October to shine a light on afterschool programs and the opportunities they provide young people to learn and grow. In a typical year, 8,000+ events draw 1 million Americans. This year, a mix of in-person and virtual activities will take place.
GOOD DOCS is providing complimentary access to River City Drumbeat from Oct 24-28. Go to GOOD DOCS sign up to receive a code to stream the film.

Q&A with NASA Deputy Administrator and Astronaut Pam Melroy
The STEM Next Opportunity Fund, Million Girls Moonshot and NASA are collaborating with the Afterschool Alliance to provide opportunities for students to engage with scientists and engineers contributing to NASA's missions. On Monday, Nov. 8, at 3 p.m. ET, join us for a live Q&A session with Pam Melroy -- a former Air Force test pilot, astronaut, and NASA's current deputy administrator! Melroy is second in command at NASA and one of only two women to command a space shuttle. As an astronaut, Melroy logged more than 38 days in space as part of missions to build the International Space Station.
Be sure to tune in as we celebrate Lights On Afterschool and National STEM Day with an exciting conversation about all things STEM and space exploration! Please note if you will have students participating.
Submit your questions in advance, and NASA will read them live at the event. Topics to consider: what do you want to know about space exploration, NASA, the International Space Station, or being an astronaut? Or, you might ask about Melroy's career path, what her days are like leading up the nation's space agency, or anything else related to her work or her journey to her leadership role. If you can't join the event at 3pm ET, not to worry, send your questions in and watch the event online at NASA's website afterwards.
As we finish this week full of connections, reflections, and new ideas, come together for a mindful moment: an opportunity to breathe and take stock of all the great learnings of the week. This mindfulness session will be focused on the power of expressing gratitude. Even in the midst of so many unknowns and the need for so much resilience, we can find ways to be grateful for things in our lives both big and small.
Casey Escola, a team member at Committee for Children, will be leading this 30 minute mindfulness practice that will be appropriate for both kids and grown-ups. We will begin and end with a Mind Yeti session (designed for kids) and discuss the importance of gratitude in adult's lives by exploring a lesson from the SEL for Adults program by the makers of Second Step. Join us for some relaxation, fun, and gratitude!
Intended audience:
Preschool and above - all ages!
