Senate unanimously passes bipartisan Lights On Afterschool Resolution

On October 2, bipartisan resolution S. Res. 731 passed the U.S. Senate unanimously calling for the recognition of Lights On Afterschool, a celebration of afterschool programs nationwide. The lead sponsors of the resolution, Sens. Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Tina Smith (D-Minn.), recognized the outstanding contributions afterschool programs have made this summer and school year during the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, the 2020 Lights On Afterschool resolution was co-sponsored by Sens. Mike Braun (R-Ind.), Pat Roberts (R-Kansas), Tim Kaine (D-Va.), Elizabeth Warner (D-Mass.), Bob Casey (D-Pa.).

The unanimous adoption of the resolution marks the 19th year that the Senate has recognized Lights On Afterschool and the value and importance of afterschool programs. Last year, more than one million people participated in more than 8,000 Lights On Afterschool events across the nation. This year Lights On Afterschool events are happening virtually in communities nationwide, fostering awareness of afterschool programs among the public and elected officials, and demonstrating the value of such programs by allowing participants to showcase the skills they have learned and talents they have developed.

Senator Collins noted, “Afterschool programs provide an enriching environment for students once the school day has ended. During the COVID-19 pandemic, afterschool programs in Maine and throughout the country have gone above and beyond to ensure that children still receive virtual programing, nutritious meals, and support essential workers and their families…By engaging young people in academic and physical activities, these programs enhance students’ education and help promote healthy habits. In addition, afterschool programs provide parents with peace of mind knowing that their children are in a safe and structured setting.”

Senator Smith said “During the coronavirus pandemic, many afterschool programs have risen to the challenge of engaging and supporting students and families while still protecting the health and safety of students, families and staff…It takes exceptional community builders and academic leaders to guide afterschool programs through these uncertain times. Afterschool programs enhance students’ education and help promote healthy habits.”

You can be part of the nationwide Lights On Afterschool celebration as well by taking part in virtual events throughout the week of Oct. 19-23. The exciting activities – from STEM to mindfulness to our youth town hall – were designed with our amazing partners for all to enjoy. There’s something for everyone, whether you are a supporter, a community leader, a parent, a youth, or an afterschool educator seeking a special activity for your students or strategies to inform your own work. Just sign up for the events you want, and log in on event day.
