3 quick ideas for a healthy, happy Lights On Afterschool

Afterschool programs play many important roles in their communities, but one of the most powerful is the positive impact out-of-school time programs can have on the health of their students. From providing healthy meals and safe places to play outside, to supporting students’ mental and emotional health with trauma-informed practices, afterschool programs are a key part of the overall well-being of their participants.

For the 20th Lights On Afterschool, health and wellness is once more one of our top themes for afterschool celebrations. Here are a few fun ideas to shine a spotlight on the impact your program is making in the lives of your kids!

  • Join Nickelodeon’s Worldwide Day of Play and get up, get out, and get active on September 29! Be sure to check “My event has physical activity in honor of Nickelodeon's Worldwide Day of Play.” in your Lights On Afterschool event registration.
  • Put health and wellness at the center of your celebration by choosing activities that are truly active! Hosting a health fair, organizing a community hike, or playing a game of kickball make for amazing events, as do dance parties, fun runs, and parades.
  • Showcase afterschool’s important role in giving kids access to healthy meals and snacks by providing nutritious refreshments. Go one step further by encouraging students to prepare the meal or snack together, using an easy, healthy recipe.
