This briefing will include the release of the latest America After 3PM special report, “Promoting Healthy Futures: Afterschool Provides the Supports Parents Want for Children’s Well-Being” – an in-depth, pre-pandemic survey that shows parents increasingly turn to afterschool programs to provide the positive settings, relationships and experiences that support children’s healthy development.

We invite you to join us for a presentation and interactive discussion with Dr. Robin Elliott, Associate Dean & Director of SEL at Long Island University and Larry Taylor, Executive Director of Youth Development at YMCA of Greater Houston in which they will discuss proven strategies to support front line staff and help them stay centered while simultaneously working to recruit, hire and retain new staff. After brief presentations, there will be a panel discussion facilitated by Elle Essenmacher with Harmony SEL and an open Q&A with the audience.

With new resources available for summer programming, and great challenges facing our students, we have an opportunity to make summer 2022 a game-changer for students. While this summer provides a tremendous opportunity to help youth thrive, this winter is the ideal time to plan your 2022 summer programs. The Afterschool Alliance, Every Hour Counts, and the National Summer Learning Association have teamed up to offer a webinar reviewing what it takes to make a summer program successful, recommendations for planning effectively right now, and tips from program leaders.

Nearly 90% of families in the U.S. became eligible for the Child Tax Credit (CTC) when it was expanded last year. Families can still claim the full 2021 CTC - up to $3,600 per child per family - by filing tax returns this year. Join the Afterschool Alliance, Out of School Time Coalition partners, the Coalition on Human Needs and the Partnership for America's Children for a training on what the expanded CTC is, who is eligible, and how you can help families you work with claim this critical benefit. 

The New York Life Foundation will award 40 grants to out-of-school time programs serving middle school youth through their Aim High grant program. Join us for this webinar to learn more about the funding opportunity, eligibility requirements, and expectations. 

The Institute for Citizens & Scholars (C&S) and Afterschool Alliance will host an online webinar moderated and led by students from the Kentucky Student Voice Team (KSVT). The students will share more about the report co-authored by C&S and KSVT, to be published Nov. 8.

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, educators around the country are seeing an increasing need to support young people who may be struggling with anxiety, depression, fear, trauma, food, insecurity, or even homelessness. One crucial avenue through which afterschool and summer learning program staff can help support young people is through the development of social and emotional skills, behaviors and beliefs. Join us for a great discussion of how and why afterschool programs around the country are leveraging SEL to help kids recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Join us for the centerpiece event of the 22nd annual Lights On Afterschool, the nation’s celebration of afterschool programs. Youth from programs around the country will share reflections on the past year and a half and how their afterschool programs have impacted their lives, perspectives on what youth need to thrive, and hopes for the future. A special segment will be devoted to recognizing the powerful role of afterschool program staff and mentors in shaping the lives of young people.
