Savannah Lesser

"What I like best about my program at the Boys & Girls Club is that it is a place where I can go hang out with friends."

Torani Sugar Free French Vanilla Syrup is sporting a new, limited-edition art label designed by 13-year-old budding artist Savannah Lesser from the Farmington Public Library's Great After School Program (GASP). For a sixth year in a row, Torani has held a national competition to find artwork from an afterschool participant to display on Torani Syrups limited-edition beverage labels. Savannah's artwork was chosen from hundreds of entries submitted by afterschool students from around the country.

What I like best about my program at the Boys & Girls Club is that it is a place where I can go hang out with friends. I can also draw; go to the library to read. And I think that it's really great for kids because the staff is so nice. Kids who are not in afterschool programs are probably bored because they wouldn't have much else to do. I want everyone to know that my program is a safe place for kids. They can express themselves and meet new friends. But the most important thing to remember is that if you're having trouble at home, or need help with your homework you can let the afterschool staff know. They are there to help you if you need it. I was really excited when I found out that I won the Torani Art for Kids contest. I am also excited to be the second kid from an afterschool program in Farmington, NM to win. I thought of a butterfly for my inspiration for the drawing and went with what I call a groove pattern. Everyone was amazed by it. I loved it. It's how I am: It has freedom and can fly anywhere it wants to.

America's Afterschool Storybook tells the stories of people and communities transformed by afterschool programs.

The Afterschool Alliance launched the Storybook to help commemorate the 10th anniversary of the 21st Century Community Learning Centers, the only federal initiative dedicated to supporting community afterschool programs.
