Linking Your Lights On! Event to Afterschool for All

Use your Lights On Afterschool event to announce your partnership in Afterschool for All - and to encourage local leaders and partners to sign on. Signing on to Afterschool for All means that you support the goal of afterschool for all, and join the voices of thousands nationwide in calling for more programs. There are currently more than 18,000 Afterschool for Allpartners. Partners include governors, educators, business leaders, youth advocates, parents, mayors, police and faith based leaders among many others. Click here to view the most recent list of Afterschool for All partners.

Ways to make Afterschool for All part of your event:

  • Recruit the support of your local mayor, superintendent, principal, corporate partners or others. Ask them to agree to sign on to the Project at your event as a public demonstration of their support for afterschool. Create a large visual on posterboard so that everyone can see the signing.

  • Print our Afterschool for All petition of support and have guests at your event sign on. After the event, send the list to your community leaders to show them how much support exists for afterschool. Send us a copy, and signers of the petition will be added to the list partners for Afterschool for All. Send your petition to Marie Coichy in our NY office. Email mcoichy@afterschoolalliance.org for help making Afterschool for All part of your event. Or, print copies of our sign on form to distribute and collect at your event (download sign up form- should link to attached word doc).

  • Create a Lights On Afterschool petition to rally members of your community to ask city and state leaders to support Afterschool for All. Simply download this sample petition of support for Afterschool for All that members of your community can sign and that you can send to your community leaders. Signers of the list will be recognized on the list of partners for Afterschool for All which is displayed on the Afterschool for All website. Be sure to send a copy of the list to the Afterschool Alliance at: mcoichy@afterschoolalliance.org so that we include all signers on the Afterschool for All List of Partners.

  • Insert a dose of Afterschool for All in the promotional materials for your Lights On Afterschool event. For example, include recruitment forms with registration materials.

  • Set a goal of partners to sign on – make it a Afterschool for All community challenge! Adding new partners can strengthen the support for afterschool and help build new partnerships in your community.

The list of Afterschool for All partners is a great piece to share with the public, media and decision-makers to demonstrate the broad support that exists for afterschool. Use it in your community to build coalitions and form partnerships.

Here is the statement that more than 18,000 organizations and individuals have already signed onto:

"Afterschool for All supports the vision that all children and youth deserve access to quality, affordable afterschool programs. Afterschool programs keep kids safe, help working families and inspire learning. It is time to come together around this important issue to deliver a united, powerful message about afterschool programs. Afterschool for All will help shape the future of afterschool - and our youth. My organization supports the goal of making afterschool programs available to all young people and would like to be a partner in Afterschool for All!"

Afterschool for All was created by the Afterschool Alliance to show how many Americans think afterschool programs are vital for our children, families and communities. There are no requirements to be a Partner. Partners’ will receive periodic updates about the state of afterschool in America. Partner information will not be shared or sold.
