The Afterschool Alliance thanks Boys & Girls Clubs everywhere for your energy and creativity in celebrating Lights On Afterschool!

We're thrilled to be working with you, and your national office, for this year's celebration on October 18, 2007. Be sure to register so that you get your Lights On Afterschool posters, and your event gets counted in the national total and is featured on our website.

In New Hampshire, the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Nashua worked with local partners to run a carnival at Greeley Park in Nashua featuring games, clowns, refreshments and an appearance by the Nashua Pride minor league baseball team. 12 schools that are part of the 21st CCLC program took part in the celebration. Partner agencies included the YMCA, Big Brothers Big Sisters, 4-H, Girls Inc., the Adult Learning Center, the Salvation Army, the public library, and the Police Athletic League. Banners and artwork made by the 12 participating schools was displayed, and the children recited a pledge, "I Can Achieve." Invited guests included the Mayor and other government officials.

In Springfield, Missouri, the Boys & Girls Club, YMCA and the Springfield-Greene County Park Board hosted an event that featured performances and demonstrations by a ballet company, the Southwest Missouri University football and basketball teams, a choir, and a competitive cheer squad. Students from nine at-risk elementary schools presented essays and art expressing what they like best about afterschool programs. Invited guests included State Senator Norma Champion, former State Senator Bentley, Mayor Thomas Carlson, the school superintendent, the school board, and board members of the park service, the Boys & Girls Club, and the YMCA

In Hot Springs, Arkansas, the Boys & Girls Club, Hot Springs School District and the YMCA hosted afterschool open houses at four magnet schools serving inner-city youth. The events focused on different disciplines, including visual and performing arts; math, science and technology; and aerospace and environmental science. Parents, children, and the community were invited to take part in afterschool enrichment activities normally offered to students, including classes in robotics, elementary algebra, science investigation, flight simulation, ballet, violin, Spanish, and more. Invited guests included U.S. Representative Mike Ross, Arkansas State Representatives Bob Mathis and Rick Saunders, Arkansas State Senator Terry Smith, Mayor Mike Bush, City Manager Kent Meyers, Police Chief Gary Ashcraft, the local school board, and the School Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent.
