In New Hampshire, the Boys & Girls Club of
Greater Nashua worked with local partners to run
a carnival at Greeley Park in Nashua featuring games,
clowns, refreshments and an appearance by the Nashua
Pride minor league baseball team. 12 schools that are
part of the 21st CCLC program took part in the celebration.
Partner agencies included the YMCA, Big Brothers Big
Sisters, 4-H, Girls Inc., the Adult Learning Center,
the Salvation Army, the public library, and the Police
Athletic League. Banners and artwork made by the 12
participating schools was displayed, and the children
recited a pledge, "I Can Achieve." Invited guests included
the Mayor and other government officials.
In Springfield, Missouri, the Boys & Girls
Club, YMCA and the Springfield-Greene County Park
Board hosted an event that featured performances and
demonstrations by a ballet company, the Southwest Missouri
University football and basketball teams, a choir, and
a competitive cheer squad. Students from nine at-risk
elementary schools presented essays and art expressing
what they like best about afterschool programs. Invited
guests included State Senator Norma Champion, former
State Senator Bentley, Mayor Thomas Carlson, the school
superintendent, the school board, and board members
of the park service, the Boys & Girls Club, and the
YMCA
In Hot Springs, Arkansas, the Boys & Girls
Club, Hot Springs School District and the YMCA hosted
afterschool open houses at four magnet schools serving
inner-city youth. The events focused on different disciplines,
including visual and performing arts; math, science
and technology; and aerospace and environmental science.
Parents, children, and the community were invited to
take part in afterschool enrichment activities normally
offered to students, including classes in robotics,
elementary algebra, science investigation, flight simulation,
ballet, violin, Spanish, and more. Invited guests included
U.S. Representative Mike Ross, Arkansas State Representatives
Bob Mathis and Rick Saunders, Arkansas State Senator
Terry Smith, Mayor Mike Bush, City Manager Kent Meyers,
Police Chief Gary Ashcraft, the local school board,
and the School Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent.
