Charlotte Motel Offers Free After-School Program, Spectrum News (North Carolina)

Several families experiencing homelessness stay at the Southern Comfort Inn in Charlotte, North Carolina while they seek permanent housing. To support the children in these families, the motel’s owners began a free afterschool program. Each weekday in the lobby, approximately 25 students receive free meals and academic support while building relationships with each other and the Inn’s owners. “I think it’s awesome,” Larre Simms, a mother of three children living in the Inn, told Spectrum News. “I hope more hotels do the same thing she is doing because there are other kids in other hotel rooms that can do the afterschool program to help children.”

YMCA of Silicon Valley Joins Multi-City Coalition Observing ‘Safer Internet Day,’ San Jose Inside (California)

Along with YMCA programs in 15 other cities across the country, YMCA of Silicon Valley afterschool programs in California recently hosted “Be Internet Awesome” workshops for parents. “Be Internet Awesome” is an initiative from Google that aims to help families avoid online scams, protect their privacy online, talk about questionable internet content with their children, and use the internet safely and responsibly. “As technology use among children continues to rise, parents often tell us that they feel they should be doing more to monitor their children’s screen time activity and give guidance on responsible digital citizenship,” YMCA of Silicon Valley Senior Vice President of Operations Mary Hashiko Haughey, an Afterschool Ambassador for the Afterschool Alliance, told San Jose Inside. “We are proud to partner with Google to respond to the changing needs of families and to get Google’s Be Internet Awesome resources in front of parents.”
