Nonprofit Health System Executive Brings After-School Chess Program to Ferguson-Florissant Schools (Daily Signal, Missouri)

Students throughout the Ferguson-Florissant school district will get to learn chess afterschool this fall thanks to a new program offered by the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of St. Louis. The program will be funded by nonprofit health system Ascension and will offer classes run by a certified chess instructor once a week for ten weeks. Over 400 kids in the St. Louis area will get to participate in the program, hopefully improving their reading, math, strategic planning and decision-making abilities while building a lifelong love of the game. “It’s a terrific opportunity to instill confidence in our children and provide them with lifelong skills that will enable future successes,” Superintendent Joseph Davis told the Daily Signal.

‘Illuminating Lincoln’ Shining a Light on Art, Afterschool Program (Omaha World-Herald, Nebraska)

More than 50 artists have erected unique lightbulb-shaped sculptures throughout Lincoln to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Lighthouse afterschool program. “Our number one goal is to educate the public of the importance of afterschool programming,” ‘Illuminating Lincoln’ project director Liz Shea-McCoy told the Omaha World-Herald. Lighthouse will host a public viewing of the sculptures on October 8th, and on October 9th the sculptures will be auctioned off to raise funds for the afterschool program.

New Creative Peacemakers Program Teaches Nonviolence (Asheville Citizen-Times, North Carolina)

An afterschool program is teaching children to create peace in themselves and their communities. The Creative Peacemakers program in West Asheville teaches underprivileged elementary school students conflict resolution skills, compassion and self-control through music, art, dance and discussion. “Peace means you can calm yourself down and feel your inner feelings,” ten-year-old Ella Kimrey told the Asheville Citizen-Times. “Peace gives the world happiness. If you don’t have peace, the world would just be grumpy.” The children recently made pinwheels decorated with words of peace and compassion to display at Asheville’s International Day of Peace Celebration on September 21.

After-School Program to Teach Boston Teens Music, Film Industry Skills (Bay State Banner, Massachusetts)

A musician, an audio engineer and an entrepreneur have teamed up to develop an innovative afterschool program that will bring more young people of color into the recording and sound industry. Three days a week, several hundred high school students will learn the fundamentals of audio engineering, recording, animation, lighting, music production and business management at two Boston locations, thanks to the vision of Kavayah Wright, Richard Smith and Anthony Schultz. They hope it will eventually help the teens secure internships and jobs at concert venues and in television, film and theater. “It’s important for our youth to be involved in media and arts,” Wright told the Bay State Banner. “They need to know what’s out there.”
